This Week’s Life Update: So, if you’ve been following along on Instagram, this has been one of the most transformative weeks of my life. I’ve done 4 of 5 flights so far and have been everywhere from San Francisco, Tehachapi, LA, Toronto, and now Nashville. So far, I’ve attended two football games, went to my first frat party, saw my cousin at Vanderbilt, spent time with my family, brought a secret collab to life with a photoshoot, danced in the streets of Nashville at midnight with Lucky #3, and listened to live music at Tootsies. And as you read this, I’ll be at the USA vs. Iceland women’s soccer game. But the most impactful experience was volunteering with Defy Ventures at a level 3 prison, where I had the privilege of judging a seven-month entrepreneurship program designed to help incarcerated individuals rehabilitate and reintegrate into society. In this week’s lesson I’m going to write a bit about my overall experience, but this will need to be an entire HSR podcast episode because there’s THAT much to say.

This Week’s AMA: First of all, I LOVE doing AMAs on Instagram. I feel like it’s such a great way to show my real personality online and connect more closely with all of you. One question I wanted to address here was, “How do I prioritize myself and self-care when traveling constantly?” because there are a few ways to approach this. First, it’s about recognizing that there are different seasons in life. I’m currently in a season where I don’t actually feel like I’m doing the best job at that. I’ve been dealing with a nerve issue in my spine and a hectic schedule, which has impacted how often and how intensely I can exercise. Plus, I want to fully experience all that the places I’m traveling to have to offer! The old me would have been hard on me and my body, but the new me understands that this season, too, will pass. I know it’s within my control to change my habits to guide me in the right direction. One habit I’ll never let go of, no matter how busy I am, is writing down my thoughts and reflections and sharing them with the HSR community (like I’m doing now). I’ve always been an open book, hoping that my words might impact someone going through something similar. In a big way, AMAs and ICYMI are part of my own self-care, and I want to thank you for being a part of that every single week by waiting for and reading this religiously.

This Week’s Lesson: I had no idea what to expect during my time with Defy Ventures this past week. All I knew walking in was that I was terrified. I was about to work with 40 incarcerated individuals, whom aren’t serving time for petty theft—they are serving sentences for serious crimes. But as soon as I walked in, my fear turned into excitement. We spent the first hour doing icebreakers and introductions. I mentioned my background working with some of the biggest rappers in the world, which definitely helped my street cred. Then we broke into pods to rotate between five judges and five EITs (Entrepreneurs-in-Training) to provide feedback and vote on who would represent us in the final competition between the five pods. After wrapping up the first section, we participated in a deeply emotional exercise where the EITs stood on one side of a line and the volunteers on the other. We crossed the line whenever a statement resonated with us, ranging from “I’ve worried about food for as long as I can remember” to “I’ve had parents tell me I’ll never amount to anything” to “I grew up with addicts.” After 40 minutes of seeing how much hardship some people have faced, I was an emotional mess, realizing just how unfair life can be for some and how blessed I’ve been throughout my own life. So I don’t take up the entire newsletter with this, I’m going to save the rest of the day’s play-by-play for a podcast episode, but walking out, I realized that life comes down to a series of choices and yesterday’s choice's don’t impact what you can choose today or tomorrow.

HSR PODCAST UPDATE: It’s finally happening because we’re filming the first five episodes in November. I’m so excited. There will be one solo episode, one with Katie and me, one featuring two entrepreneurs at different stages of their businesses, and the third episode with Lucky #3! Because I want to build the HSR podcast with you all, this week’s giveaway poll is ANY and ALL feedback on the podcast so please leave your thoughts for guest, episode or creative ideas!

This Week’s Affirmation: I have the power to change my life, my body, my situation, with one small positive choice at a time.
