Women Worth Celebrating, Step Into Your HSR Power, & Startup Mode
Hallelujah! It’s Sunday!
Time for my favorite part of the week, ICYMI for HSR Insiders.
ICYMI ₊♡₊˚ 🍒・₊✧ ₊
Getting Fired Up: Even though I’m always working, this is the kind of stuff that fires me up to not have the Sunday scaries. ICYMI, I posted a video rating the most shocking ads from the 20th century featuring women. Comment the most shocking ad because it’s hard to believe they’re even real.
Skinny Confidential x HSR for IWD: ICYMI, I was the guest feature on The Skinny Confidential Blog for IWD!! When Lauryn asked me to come on for IWD, I was beyond flattered and knew exactly what to chat about – My Top 8 Tips for Women in Business who are Intimidated by the Boys Club and Want to Step Into their Hot Smart Rich Power.
My week in health: I had a PCOS flare up and Midol came to the rescue (yet again) and ICYMI, I showed you how I gua sha with my HSR angel number gua sha. It’s literally addictive. The BoF also shared that Oura Ring is now on Amazon and I had to share because I wear mine 24/7!!! I also shared the mental health HSR girl toxic traits to get rid of because no body has time for that shit (and yes, I’m guilty of this).
Startup mode: I fell back in love with sharing startup content this week and it got me so energized!!! From sharing how to raise money right now (more below!), behind the scenes of a meeting with multi million dollar tech company, to attending a Nudestix event where I felt like the coolest investor there (partly thanks to my Hot Smart Rich Girl capsule wardrobe from Revolve that I shared as well), it was a great week.
Gloss Angeles Podcast: On top of that, I joined hosts Kirbie Johnson and Sara Tan on the Gloss Angeles Podcast to break down my take on what happened with JVN and Amyris. It was so cool seeing my besties sharing the episode across social before I was even able to listen! I always say this but THANK YOU for supporting me. It means everything.
Raising Money: ICYMI, I went to an investor event hosted by J.P. Morgan and Goodwin where top investors shared what they’re looking for in the consumer and tech space. So for my HSR Founders, here are my 9 tips to raise money right now because it’s tough out there right now. If you enjoyed these tips, follow me on LinkedIn because I share them there first!
Revolve Picks: I’m in my capsule wardrobe building era which made me LOL when I Lucy’s Founder Rich Girl Hack (more below)!
HSR PODCAST PLAYLIST: We officially have a master podcast playlist up and running for the HSR Podcast Recommendations. This is where all new episodes will be added to and there is something in the works for HSR Insiders who can get the podcast playlists separated by category and play time (coming soon!).
This Week’s Moodboard
♡ Consumer News ♡
consumer content, news, things, or people I’m currently obsessed with
I had to include this section this week since Harry’s made a huge announcement on Friday + a few other things!
Harry’s (Confidentially) Files for IPO: I CANNOT wait to dig through this S1 (when it’s available) and share all of my thoughts with you because their story is absolutely crazy!! The Harry’s IPO is big since it’s being marketed as the first DTC brand that will IPO with profitability. Let’s see how the market reacts.
Kylie is everywhere; she launched a RTD Seltzer on the heels of her perfume and recently launching Khy. She may be on fire, but IMO she needs to cool down. More on TikTok this week.
Tennis WAGS are back in action at Indian Wells - Morgan Riddle is leading with the opposite of an influencer trip where she’s taking the BRANDS to the players box (obsessed) and Paige Lorenze is sponsored by Miu Miu. This is apparently THE miu miu bag du jour.
Juneshine buys Flying Embers in an all stock deal (which is never great). More info on TikTok coming this week!
Women Worth Celebrating
This week, I spent a lot of time thinking about women and how amazing we are!! Female creators get a really bad reputation, which is just not true. It’s like EVERY industry, there are good and bad apples. I’m all about collaboration > competition so I shared my favorite female creator entrepreneurs who have always mentioned my name in a room full of opportunities and they deserve to be celebrated! It was so interesting to see so many comments not knowing about them yet which made me SO happy.
Pia Mance, Founder & CEO of Heaven Mayhem, bootstrapped 7 figure business
Siff Haider, Co-founder & Co-CEO of Arrae, 8 figure business (you can use code HSR15 for 15% off!)
Serena Kerrigan, Founder & CEO, SFK & Let’s Fucking Date, bootstrapped and now sells on Revolve
Allison McNamara, Founder & CEO of Mara Beauty, bootstrapped and sold at Sephora and Revolve
Kenzie Elizabeth, Founder & CEO of Friend of Mine, building the modern day Martha Stewart
Danielle Robay, Founder & CEO, Pretty Smart, just interviewed Jada Pinkett Smith and was just announced as Hello Sunshine’s newest podcast Host, The Bright Side.
Nicole Bruno, Founder & CEO, No Bread, NB VC, Angel Investor, and the wifey power couple behind Bruno Strong!
Tiana Haraguchi, Founder & CEO of Suckerz, and works 2 very demanding full time jobs
Michelle Battersby, Co-Founder & CMO of Sunroom, pregnant and living away from her husband and family while building a tech company that she’s raised $10M for!!
Founder Feature: Michelle & Lucy from Sunroom
This week I took you behind the scenes of a multi-million dollar tech start up meeting where I was providing founders with my advice and input as they continue to grow and evolve their tech company, Sunroom! Michelle, Chief Marketing Officer, and Lucy, Chief Executive Officer, are the co-founders of Sunroom. Sunroom is a space for women creators to create content & connect intimately with their communities and get paid to exist.
As co-founders, they have used their past experiences in the tech space — Lucy, as a former Lead Designer at Hinge and Michelle, as Director of APAC marketing at Bumble — to bring the idea from concept to creation. They’ve raised over $10M of funding to date and are just getting started.
I had Michelle and Lucy share their tips and tricks on how they get hot smart rich as female founders and am sharing them with you!!
As an early stage founder I LOVED Lucy’s Founder Rich Girl Hack because believe me, she isn’t lying. This week I shared some of my HSR Capsule Collection from Revolve which you loved so here is the full thing!!
To keep up with what they’re building head to www.beamslab.com or follow @michellebattersby and @lucy_mort on Instagram.
HSR Glossary
We’re officially inducting two new terms to the HSR Glossary! I coined the term easter egg credibility and refer to them all frequently as your Hot Smart Rich leader but all of them are explained in more detail on the Gloss Angels podcast episode that came out this week!
If you want the TLDL;
Easter egg credibility
When a person of influence or public figure leaves breadcrumbs for their audience, or community, to lay the foundation of credibility in an industry they’re looking to build a business in. It's almost like taking your consumer and community along the journey of you building it even before it's announced. When celebrities or creators are smart and have a good team around them, this gets executed really well!
I thought Hailey Beiber did such a good job of paving credibility in beauty aligning herself with Dr. Barbara Sturm before launching Rhode or Pamela Anderson going fresh faced on the red carpet before co-founding Sonsie.
Incubator
The best way to explain it is an incubator would be an unseen group of people, probably experienced operators or a business, where they want to pump out multiple brands that have a differentiated approach, but that will shared services and will have scalability. For a beauty incubator like Amayris (JVN, Rose Inc, Biossance, with 10+ other brands) was, they can have many different facing retail brands to the consumer, but then they will share services like produce development, operations, sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, HR, finance, accounting, etc. There's a lot of benefits in terms of unit economics and economies of scale for the incubation house.
Shiny Object Syndrome
The phenomenon of a founder, or startup, diverting all their attention to something new, current, and sexy (or shiny), regardless of how valuable or helpful it could be in helping them build towards their north star. In my opinion, it’s the biggest startup killer when a founder tries to do too much instead of doing one thing well.
You’re Hot Smart Rich
If you haven’t shared with me before, I’d love to learn more about you in my
TYSM, I♡U!!!!
In case you're new here, I sporadically do secret giveaways for the people who are supporting me on this journey of becoming an accidental creator and media entrepreneur while I continue to do what I love most, which is invest in companies and work with founders.
This week, we’re giving away some of my favorite products from The Skinny Confidential!! Thank you to Lauryn and her team for being part of this week’s giveaway! SO to enter this week's giveaway, comment on this video with a 🎀 emoji and one thing you love about women!! Unlimited entries count.
