HSR Insider's ICYMI: Issue 028
Learning Era, Challenges, & Aging Backwards
Hallelujah! It’s Sunday!
Time for my favorite part of the week, ICYMI for HSR Insiders.
ICYMI ₊♡₊˚ 🍒・₊✧ ₊
ART WEEK: The time is finally here for Frieze LA! I am so excited to absolutely immerse myself in art this week. Stay tuned for the BTS of the coolest and most exclusive parties, startups and art breakdowns that I can’t wait to share. We’ve been prepping for this week so to say I’m excited would be an UNDERSTATEMENT.
Ups and Downs: Life is weird atm because I’m uncomfortable, which means I’m growing. I’m vulnerable and at risk of being hurt and failing in work, life and love so instead, I’m self proclaiming this as my “learning era”. It’s really hard for me to be vulnerable ICYMI, so I figured I’d start where it feels best, to my HSR insiders.
Challenge Network: I was listening to a podcast (don’t worry the HSR playlist is coming back tomorrow) and it talked about the reality that the best entrepreneurs not only have cheerleaders around them, but they have a challenge network. People you trust have your best interests at heart and will humble you with honest yet challenging feedback and advice. This isn’t something I’ve had the last few years and it’s a priority for me to continue to find people I trust have my best interests at heart to help me figure out the next steps forward.
Making Changes: ICYMI, I shared some behind the scenes of how I made some changes this week when it comes to operating HSR and how I’m going about creating impact and providing value for this community and I loved your responses. In case you need to hear it, this is a two way community!! Your comments actually help inform the type of content you want to see. Part of the reason I’ve slacked on the podcast playlist is they didn’t seem to be as well received as they initially were so I focused attention elsewhere. The community will always inform what HSR does next so if you like something, your engagement will help me keep it as a priority or your suggestion of what else to do will be taken seriously!
Your Support: ICYMI, I talked about the sexism female creators have faced in advertising after seeing Amazon, Walmart, Youtube and Snapchat’s advertising results from Q4 (they’re all make billions from advertisers). It’s also the fact that 30% of Instacart’s revenue comes from advertising (to literally offset a slow down in consumer spending), but when a female creator (typically more so than males) post sponsored content, it flops or they’re called a “sell out”. I only worked with 6 brands last year and they were all authentic to me and the products or services I use or would recommend to my own portfolio company. To be honest, I’ve been afraid of sponsored content even when it’s inbound from brands that I actually love and use in fear of what the community will think. That being said, HSR is now a real company and a team that’s building to deliver real case studies, insights and a formalized investment arm that needs the partnership of authentic advertisers to help build this business. Transparently, there is literally no money in micro early-stage VC for 5-10 years, so HSR and I will be aligning with the brands and technology that I genuinely love and believe in. You know that from the first original HSR series, Rich & Real (which is coming back in a BIG way), I will always do things that drive impact and value and hope I can count on your support as this rolls out.
Other ICYMIs: Here’s what to watch if you want to start a business, the types of businesses I’d be thinking about starting right now. This week, I was featured in the daily mail for my viral top 10 inexpensive health upgrades for a major glow up which was fun! I also hopped on the ExxonMobil prank bandwagon and @mom and dad if you’re reading this, I love you both so incredibly much and am now manifesting a real collaboration with ExxonMobil and will be taking you both as my plus 1’s.
Lastly: It’s really hard to be a woman and it’s why I talk about all things related to the female experience on my channel. I have experienced so many things that men would NEVER in the startup industry that now dating feels like an important part of the HSR mission. It’s complicated and hard. Does he want to do business with me or does he like me? Why is he double following up with me on text on Friday night at 8pm when he’s married and we met in a business meeting to ask me what my plans are for the weekend? Weird, weird, weird and I hope that by sharing my own experiences it helps you feel a little less alone if you’re going through weird vibes too.
What kind of content do you want to see more of?I'd love your input on what types of content you want to see more of!! |
This Week’s Moodboard
♡ Consumer News ♡
Consumer content, news, things, or people I’m currently obsessed with
Your AI Personal Dating Coach?! Analyze your situationship with AI: I recently met Stanford grad Alex Weitzman who started Amori, an app where sassy AI dating coaches spill the tea about your texts. It's like having a personal detective who decodes your messages for dating advice. You just need to upload your texts from iMessage or WhatsApp and AI coaches will give you an in depth analysis about your attachment styles, or even red flags. You can even ask questions like "Is this love bombing?" or "Why are they ghosting me?" I would be lying if I said I haven’t used it and it may have predicted the outcome of my situationship dramatically well within 10 seconds. I convinced Alex to give HSR insiders the VIP treatment so you can skip to the front of the beta waitlist when you download Amori and use code HSR2024.
Ozempic Face: After the Upkeep panel I was on this week, I continued to deep dive into research around the medical aesthetics industry. I previously have shared my thoughts on how Ozempic is going to revolutionize the American economy (even more so than AI in the near term) and this article is an example of why. When people (with money) decide they’re going to lose weight with the help of Ozempic, they’re going to continue investing in themself and their new appearance. I shared my thoughts on how anyone looking for a business idea can leverage the whitespace that Ozempic has created in case you’re interested!
The Future of Wellness: The same way McKinsey publishes the State of Fashion, they recently have published their 2024 Future of Wellness survey that highlights the trends of the $1.8 trillion wellness industry!! I’ve been combing through it with a fine tooth comb and like I’ve been saying for months, the future of wellness and beauty is science and data backed!
Charlotte Tilbury Is The It Girl: Ok we all know my POV, sports is the new it girl. So when I saw that Charlotte Tilbury made history to be the first ever female-founded brand to partner with the F1 Academy I was sooooo happy (and validated). Charlotte gets it and see is differentiating herself as a first mover in the female cross over to sports. Who do we think is next?
Create & Cultivate: This is another example of a founder who sold their business, the business then struggled without them at the helm, lost a ton of value and the original founder buys it back to re-group. I speak a lot about how fickle celebrity or founder lead brands can be and so I’m excited to see how Jaclyn brings new life back to her creation.
Upkeep Beauty
I was a panelist at the Upkeep Beauty event this week in LA. I shared back in January that HSR Ventures and I made an investment into the company after many months of diligence and building a relationship with the founder, Tiffany. The event just made me think about how synergistic and value add the HSR ecosystem is for founders AND our community and I can’t wait to do more of this. I also was obsessed with my outfit.
My biggest take away from the Upkeep event was something I’ve been thinking about for a while having spent so much time researching this industry. I truly believe that medical aesthetics is going to be a huge part of body and self care and it will be one part of a wholistic approach to someone’s personal self care journey. What works for me is not going to work for you and it comes down to personalization. There are so many different factors that go into personalizing each person’s experience with specific treatments and outcomes - body type, stage of life, stress, diet, exercise - and it’s important to look inwards, experiment, and try different things if you’re looking to start your journey!
But lucky for you, I’ve done the research, been the guinea pig (thank you Upkeep!) across so many spots in LA. So far, my favorite places are are Kate Somerville for Botox, Le Jolie Med Spa for EmSculpt, Lashlette Hydrafacial Boutique for Hydrafacials, Sous La Face for the RRR Facial, and Le Jolie for Morpheus8. I know, beauty treatments can be expensive and my Insiders are smart when it comes to spending their money so remember to use code C28PP for $50 off when you download the Upkeep app! I shared how I rationalize my spending on my desires/splurges in this video and you can too using The HSR 50-20-20-10 Method, my budgeting philosophy!
I’ve said this before, women get 2% of venture capital dollars but control 85% of US consumer spending. And that couldn’t be truer for medical aesthetics. Why are the women the ones paying for the treatments and experimenting but not reaping the rewards of investing into the businesses, procedures, and products that are propelling the industry forwards? Thats why events like this with female founders, business owners, and investors are so important to further the mission of empowering women and giving them access to the dollars they need to grow and scale their businesses.
HSR Glossary
This week I shared more about my investment in Locker on my Instagram stories and mentioned that they had a $0.22 CAC. With the number of people who responded to my DMs asking what CAC was, I knew I needed to include it in the HSR Glossary!
CAC: Customer Acquisition Cost
Total Marketing Spend / # Of New Customers
Customer acquisition cost is the total cost of acquiring a single new customer. This includes expenses like marketing and ad spend and any other expenses that contribute to getting your customer to convert and make a purchase. CAC is a huge indicator or profitability and viability for any business. If you’re spending more on costs to acquire customers than customers are spending on your products or services, your business model is not viable.
So why is the $0.22 CAC for Locker so impressive? For context, the average cost per acquisition for a shopping app in North America is $4.74. Having a $0.22 CAC basically means you are spending almost NO money to acquire customers and the product you’re building is so attractive, you don’t need to spend on ads to convince people to sign up. It also speaks to the effectiveness of the viral loops that Locker has set up within their referral networks to incentivize new users to sign up for the platform. It is a huge validation that the business model of Locker works and will be profitable at scale.
