Sports Is the New It Girl, Vegas Baby & A New Investment
Hallelujah! It’s Sunday!
Time for my favorite part of the week, ICYMI for HSR Insiders.
ICYMI ₊♡₊˚ 🏈・₊✧ ₊
Vegas Baby: I am in Vegas for Super Bowl! To know me is to know my LOVE of Vegas!! The past four days have been an absolute whirlwind and I’ve been having the best time even though my travel day getting here was a bit hectic 😂. I get intense food anxiety while traveling because of my celiac disease so I came stocked with Turkey Jerky and Belli Welli snacks to make it through my flights and the weekend.
Super Bowl Events: Traveling and attending events is a really exciting part of my job and it’s been even more exciting seeing myself transition from being the Head of Brand at companies who are planning and executing events to being the person invited so I vlogged a DIML going to 3 VIP Super Bowl Parties. And yes I know, my voice is tragic. I broke down why I chose to attend Super Bowl weekend below!
Master Any Room: ICYMI, last week I shared my formula on TikTok for how I master any room and build confidence and let me tell you, these tips have been in HIGH rotation this weekend at the Super Bowl. I’ve had so much positive feedback from you on this video that I wrote down my formula (no liquid courage needed) for you! I include a pocket book you can screenshot and save to your phone to review as you’re prepping for and heading to an event!
Locker: A mini Super Bowl pause but I swear it’ll come full circle…..I made my first investment of 2024, into an over subscribed round, and I couldn’t be more proud and excited that it was into Locker. I’ve spent the last 2 years advising the CEO, Kristine Locker, and she has turned into one of my best friends. So not only am I an investor but I feel like I’ve been building alongside her which is the best feeling ever. I’m seriously on a high! This is the first time I’ve put more money in when I already own a % of the company and honestly, the process was easier than buying a Chanel bag (the rough amount I invested into Locker) and done through Sydecar (which also happens to be one of my portfolio companies). The HSR ecosystem is just firing on all cylinders right now!! PS. Locker is hiring a founding Full Stack Engineer and I know my Insiders are women in STEM!
Super Bowl Looks: In order to celebrate my investment into Locker, I shared collections all of the details of my Super Bowl looks!! You can find Cash App x Visa Party, RX3 & GQ Party, Sports Illustrated Party, and The Guy Fieri viewing party over on Locker!
Beauty Break Down: Beauty is not only painful, it’s expensive. ICYMI, I followed up my 10 Inexpensive Health Upgrades For A Big Glow Up with my 10 Glow Up Treatments Worth The Splurge and you were here for it. These beauty hacks and upgrades had me serving looks all weekend long. ICYMI, I also posted my beauty routine of how I get ready for big events using none other than my favorite beauty product ever - vaseline. I swear it makes me look 15 years younger. You can find the links to the HSR Gua Sha and my full routine on amazon.
Sports Is The New It Girl: ICYMI, I posted a teaser of my upcoming POV. I am obsessed with this and more on it below.
This Week’s Moodboard
♡Consumer News♡
Consumer content, news, things, or people I’m currently obsessed with
I feel like there is SO much I could share about how the Super Bowl and sports are taking over as the number one culturally relevant topic so far this year. At my core I am a brand marketer and I have been saying for a long time that capitalizing on culturally relevant moments is such a game changer.
So this week, I’m sharing pieces of consumer news that speak to the power of riding the wave of cultural moments and how each of the companies/people have leaned into the Super Bowl to amplify their message.
WAGS Fashion: WAGS are using their star power to turn their name into a career and are fuelling the cultural relevance of fashion and sports. I love that social media has put the power in the hands of these entrepreneurial women to connect with and monetize a fan base. I’m betting there will be more than one Kristin Juszczyk look in the stands tonight. My favorite WAG has been noticeably absent from NYFW and Super Bowl weekend!! It seems like Paige Lorenze is taking her role as a CEO and Founder of Dairy Boy even more seriously these days. I mean, her bf, #3 ranked American tennis player on the ATP tour, is playing in the finals of the Dallas open today, so I guess she has a reasonable excuse.
Cash App x Visa New F1 Team: They announced their purchase and rebrand of the Red Bull F1 team at the Cash App x Visa Super Bowl Party on Friday Night and can’t wait to see it hit the tracks in 2024!! I’m manifesting another trip to Vegas later this year for F1. The world of sports colliding between F1 and the NFL just speaks to the power of the synergies at play here.
Skipping NYFW: Fashion girlie and Tennis WAG Morgan Riddle skipped NYFW to head to the Super Bowl. If that doesn’t speak to how culturally relevant and lucrative the Super Bowl is, I don’t know what will. Like I said, sports is the new it girl and the influencers and brands that understand that are coming out on top.
Beauty Arrives At The Super Bowl: Following the success of e.l.f’s 2023 Super Bowl commercial with Jennifer Coolidge and the increase in female eyes on the screen (thank you Swifties), the Super Bowl has become the perfect storm for beauty advertisers looking to diversify marketing spend out of paid Instagram and TikTok ads. I can’t wait to see how the beauty ads plays out and perform during the game. You know my POV will be coming next week
Usher Is The New Face of SKIMS Men: Kim K is the master of capitalizing on cultural moments and the Super Bowl is no exception. It just so happens that Usher, the Super Bowl half time performer, is the new face of SKIMS Men. Probably not a coincidence.
A SI Swimsuit Rookie WAG: Brittany Mahomes, wife of the KC Quarterback made her SI Swimsuit debut this week in the publications 60th anniversary issue and you guessed it, during the week of the Super Bowl. PS. Her red one piece is on sale.
Why I Paid $$$ To Go To Vegas For Super Bowl Weekend
@maggiesellers_ 4 reasons that dont include meeting my future husband 😉🙃 #superbowl
So you can't make money without spending money first, right? That’s why I paid thousands of dollars to go to Vegas for Super Bowl weekend. As an entrepreneur, it can be hard to know where to spend money for your business and where you’re going to get the biggest bang for your buck.
In case you’re wondering, I plan for and invest into myself and my goals in order to keep getting ahead and you should be too. If you’re wondering where to start, I break down how I invest into myself and my goals in The HSR 50-20-20-10 Method.
In order to evaluate my decision to go to the Super Bowl instead of another big cultural event (let’s say Coachella), I put myself through the HSR Brand Marketing Principles, because let’s be honest, I’m here to market myself. If you’re an entrepreneur, founder, or marketer looking to make a big investment into a marketing moment, the HSR Brand Bible and Marketing Principles is for you!!
Know your audience: What’s important to me right now in my business is meeting three types of people - LPs that want to invest into HSR Ventures
Know your audience: What's important to me right now in my business is meeting three types of people - LPs that want to invest into HSR Ventures (aka rich people), start up founders that I think are changing consumer behavior, and brands that want to partner with me as a creator so I can continue telling powerful stories as a creator. The chances of these three types of people all being at the Super Bowl is so much greater than spending thousands of dollars to go to Coachella. For me, the Super Bowl is a business trip, a conference if you will.
LPs (aka rich people): Do you know the cost of Super Bowl tickets? The cost of hotel rooms this weekend? There are going to be rich people all over the Super Bowl. It might be taboo to talk about money and sound kind of gross, but it’s just the reality.
Start up founders: Founders are there for two reasons. Either they’re being courted by big enterprise companies for business development OR they’re there to sell themselves and their companies to VCs (aka rich people who need other rich people’s money to keep investing) to raise money to keep operating their business.
Brands: I did some research. Apparently, Sports Illustrated has spent $3 million putting on their Super Bowl party. Brands that can afford to go and activate at Super Bowl have serious budgets. So I need to meet these brands face to face that to get them excited about partnering with me and HSR to continue making content like this for you guys.
Capitalizing cultural moments: This is literally THE cultural moment of the year for the entire United States. It’s the number one highest watched entertainment broadcast of the entire year. There are 65,000 people going to the game. There are 125,000 people traveling to Vegas for the weekend, so the chances of meeting great people is extremely high. And some context on how culturally relevant this moment is, 115 million people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl last year. That is 4-5x times higher than the second highest watched broadcast of the year, which is the Oscars. That only has 20 million people.
Create Controversy: You gotta get people talking about what you're doing, and what better way than to create a little bit of controversy? I'm already the venture capital ugly duckling, but this is my chance to really go and have a different perspective than a lot of the other people that are going be at the Super Bowl and create content about it.
Spend On The Right Marketing: One of the most important things in business is always staying ahead and innovating, and I feel like this year, The Super Bowl is evolving to be even more culturally relevant than it ever has been. Whether it's the Swifties effect, the fact that beauty is continuing to dominate in terms of advertising, or that it’s in Vegas, there's been so much hype around the Super Bowl. This is the right spend to be part of the momentum.
These are the types of brainstorms and conversations I had with Katie and my team before committing to come and heading into Super Bowl weekend to make sure I was going to be in the right places at the right time and was set up for success. The HSR Brand Marketing Principles are set up to help you do exactly that and can also be applied to your personal brand.
So did it pay off? All I can say so far is YES! This weekend has been insane for my business development and deals are getting signed. Only time will tell what the full ROI is but I obviously will keep my Insiders updated!
